Comic-Con International in San Diego is getting closer by the day and promises to bring all of the fun and excitement expected from the epic event. Along with all of the usual awesomeness that the annual event brings, Comic-Con will be hosting the 24th annual Eisner Awards on Friday, July 13th and the nominees have been announced for this year.
This year, Marvel’s “Daredevil” was honored with the most single nominations in 6 categories including Best Continuing Series and Best Single Issue. Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, an adaption by artist Ramon K. Perez from a screenplay by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl which was never produced, receives 5 nominations including Best Graphic Album-New and Best Publication design. IDW’s “Richard Stark’s Parker: The Martini Edition,” by Darwin Cooke has 3 nominations for Best Short Story, Best Graphic Album-Reprint and Best Publication Design. Marvel received an impressive 11 nominations with 2 shared.
This years Eisner Award panel of judges include reviewer Brigid Alverson, retailer Calum Johnston, librarian Jesse Karp, cartoonist Larry Marder, comics historian Benjamin Sauders and Comic-Con board of director Mary Sturhann. The judges made a few alterations to the program from previous years. First, they added two new categories- Best Publication for Early Readers, and Best Educational/Academic Work. The judges did, however, decide to cut 4 categories- Best New Series, Best Adaption from Another Medium, Best/Writer/Artist-Nonfiction, and Best Painter/Multimedia Artist. Jackie Estrada, Eisener Awards Administrator stated, “The judges chose to not have the New Series and Painter categories this year because they didn’t find enough contenders that reached the level of quality they were looking for.” Estrada added, “the extent and quality of the material submitted in the Kids and Teen categories was so high that the judges felt dividing these books into three categories was warranted.”
All of your favorite publishers, writers, creators and artists will be nominated and honored in several categories. Marvel, IDW, Top Cow, Top Shelf, Image and Boom! will be nominated in various categories along with International nominations including French cartoonist Dilles, Argentinian artist Eduardo Risso and Italian artist Sara Picelli. According to CBR, sixteen titles had 2 nominations and the remaining nominations were spread among nearly 100 books and comics in 27 categories.
We at iVerse are very excited about the well-deserved nominations and would like to wish the nominees the best of luck. The Eisner Awards, a part of Comic-Con International, showcases the best in comics and all related platforms. The organization prides itself in maintaing awareness and appreciation for all of those in the comics industry for their contribution to the art and culture.
